Ausangate (awsanqati in Quechua) the fith highest mountain in Peru with (6384 m / 20,948 ft), located in the Peruvian Andes, specifically in the Vilcanota mountain range. This spectacular mountain was considered a deity for many civilizations and even today local people still shows a lot respect.

The Ausangate trek is an adventurous route offering stunning views and spectacular mountain scenary, turquoise lakes, glaciers, hot springs, herds of Llamas, Alpacas, Vicunas, picturesque villages and traditionally dressed quechua people.

This Ausangate 5 days is a moderate to challenging trek, with several high passes and freezing nights, but not a technical hike, and most important we do not require permits to hike along these trails.

  1. Day 1 CUSCO- TINQUI – UPIS

    Starting with  an early  transfer from your hotel (5:30 am), we drive 4 hours to TINQUI village  passing Urcos pass located at (4000m/13,123 ft) Tinqui is a village on the Altiplano east from Cusco where our trek starts, the trail is wide, gently ascending path, on the way we will have spectacular view of the impressive Ausangate mountain. Around 1 pm we will have our lunch, after we will continue our trek walking through fields and typical houses, later in the afternoon we will see Llamas and Alpacas, then we will gradually go up to reach the Upis pass (4,435m/14,104 ft) and after a short descend we will get to our camp site at Upis hot springs (4,250m/13,779 ft), this beautiful place is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Here you will have the chance to enjoy the hot springs.

  2. Day 2 UPIS- AUSANGATECOCHA.

    This second day journey we will take us to another beautiful place, we begin around 7: 30 am ascending around 3 hours to Arapa pass( 4,800m/15,748 ft) when we get to the top we will have spectacular views of the Maria Huamantilla and Ausangate mountain. From this pass we walk across an arid hillside and then we descend around 50 minutes quite steeply parts sometimes, down into the valley we wil see blue glacial lakes and waterfalls where we will stop for our lunch. After lunch we continue 1 hour on a flat trail and then 1 hour gentle ascent to the second pass, the Ausangate pass (4,700m/15,420 ft) from the top we will have a beautiful view of Ausangate mountain. Then we descend 45 minutes to our camp site by the lake Ausangatecocha (4,300m/14,110 ft).

  3. Day 3 AUSANGATECOCHA- HUCHUY FINAYA-QAMPA

    Day 3  will take us to the highest point of the trek, we will leave the camp around 7 am, we will start going steep up for around 3 hours and then we will get to the Palomani pass (5,400m/17,718 ft), this high point give us an extensive views of all the peaks in the Cordillera Vilcanota. Then we will descend around 2 hours on a steep trail into the Huchuy Finaya valley where our lunch is waiting for us. This beautiful valley give us a wonderful view of the “Las dos Gemelas” or the two Twin Mountains. After lunch we continue around 3 hours on a varied path to our campsite in Qampa (4,300m/14.108 ft)

  4. Day 4 QAMPA- PACCHANTA

    Around 7 am we will start our journey to the Qampa pass (5390m/17, 17,700 ft) we will begin climbing up for 2 hours. From the top we will have spectacular vistas of the mountains, Pacchanta valley and maybe a view of some wild Vicunas, deer and if we are lucky some Condors, after we will descend gradually to the Pacchanta valley enjoying the view of Ausangate mountain and The twin mountains  around 2 hours then we will stop for our lunch. After lunch we  continue descending gradually through rocky trail around 2 ½ hours to our campsite in Pacchanta village ( 4,000m/13,123 ft), this camp give us a wonderful view of Ausangate mountain and there are hot springs at  this campsite, which we will enjoy it.

  5. Day 5 PACCHANTA- TINQUI -CUSCO

    After breakfast around 8 am we will start our last day hike for 4 hours aprox. On a varied and gentle trail to Tinqui village passing open fields like potatoe crops, Quinua fields and herds of Llamas and Alpacas and we will have final views of Ausangate M

    ountain. When we get to Tinqui village we will have our lunch and meet our driver to go back to Cusco city (3 hours drive)
